Do You Have a Water Leak? Top Signs You Need a Leak Repair
As homeowners, we try our best to keep our homes in the best shape possible. So when a water leak rears its ugly head, it can be a nightmare. Even a small leak can quickly turn into a major disaster if left untreated. At Bill Frusco Plumbing, we recommend familiarizing yourself with the signs of a water leak so that you can address them quickly The sooner they are resolved, the better for you, your home, and your wallet.
Water Stains
Yellow or brown stains on your walls or ceilings can indicate a leaky roof or leaking pipes. Additionally, bubbles that are soft to the touch can indicate leaks.
High Water Bills
With the exception of the occasional high water charges that can be accounted for (lawn watering, filling a pool, etc.), your water bill should stay fairly consistent. A sudden increase in your bill could be due to a water leak.
Musty Odors
If you notice a constant musty odor, even after cleaning, it may be due to mold and mildew. These organisms tend to grow when there is a build-up of moisture in certain areas. While common in basements and bathrooms, if you notice high amounts, or in unusual spaces, it could be due to a water leak.
Wet Spots on Floors
One of the most obvious signs of a water leak is wet spots on the floor. It’s especially concerning if they are in corners or around baseboards and trim. That could mean a leaky pipe behind the wall.
Flaking Paint
Flaking paint or wallpaper could mean there is water seeping from pipes behind the wall. Over time, these slow leaks will cause plaster to soften and paint to peel.
Wood Rot and Pests
If you notice soft, warped, cracked, or buckled wood around your home, this could indicate moisture built up due to a leak. Additionally, little piles of sawdust could mean you have termites. These pests are usually attracted to soft wood and can invade the wood, causing even more damage than leaks. If you see any of these signs, call for an inspection immediately.
Dripping Sounds
Dripping sounds coming from inside the walls are a sure sign of a leak. By the time you are able to hear dripping, it’s likely the leak has been occurring for some time. Contact a plumber as soon as possible before further damage occurs.
Reduced Water Pressure
If you suddenly notice decreased water pressure in the kitchen or bathroom, that is ongoing, and not related to other factors, it’s likely you have a leaky water pipe.
