Whether you have remodeled your property, opened a new business, or you are on the receiving end of a property inspection, you may discover that you are in violation of a plumbing code. Fortunately, you don’t have to figure out how to fix it alone. As a busy property owner, the last thing you probably want to worry about is performing your own plumbing repairs. That’s why we offer assistance with city plumbing code violations in Philadelphia. At Bill Frusco Plumbing, Heating, & Cooling, we provide honest, upfront pricing and emergency service on your schedule.

Dealing with Your Plumbing Code Violation

Whether it was discovered by an inspector, a customer, or yourself, a city plumbing code violation in Bucks County is a serious issue. While it may require an unexpected time and money investment, it’s best to work with a plumber to resolve the problem. Violations almost always happen by accident, and it may have even been a previous contractor who installed things incorrectly on your property.

Too often, newer contractors see no issue with cutting corners. For example, using the fittings they have on hand rather than purchasing the correct sizes. While it may get the job done, it may be a cause for concern later on as your plumbing system stops running as efficiently.

Regardless of who caused the code violation, if you are the property owner, you are still the one responsible for getting it fixed. That’s where Bill Frusco comes in.

Handling Plumbing Code Changes

Changes are made periodically to the Philadelphia Plumbing Code, and our team stays educated so we can continue to perform accurate repairs and installations. One of the most recent changes was in 2019, when the city plumbing code was updated to allow non-metallic piping to be used on residential properties of a certain height. This was a valuable change as it cut construction costs on residential buildings in Philadelphia. Rather than expensive copper and cast-iron piping, plastic pipes are more affordable and less prone to leakage. Contact us today to see how we can help you avoid new city plumbing code violations in Montgomery County and Philadelphia.

Common Plumbing Code Violations

Your property may generally appear safe and functional, but that doesn’t mean it measures up to highly specific city codes that are in place. Plumbing is precise, and minor variations outside the norm can cause recurring issues like slow drainage or toilet backups. If you have been found in violation of one or more plumbing codes, we can help you get things in order.

Some of the most  common city plumbing code violations in Philadelphia include:

  • Not enough space surrounding the toilet – This is one of the most common plumbing mistakes many installers make. Toilets must be placed at least 15 inches from the center of the fixture to the nearest wall.
  • Incorrect drain pipe sloping – The ideal slope is about ¼ inch per foot and definitely less than ½. With so little room for error, it is common to have a drain pipe that is not positioned at the right angle. The wrong slope can lead to more frequent clogs. This means you may end up using chemical drain cleaners more often, which creates faster pipe erosion.
  • Incorrectly sized drainage pipes – Drainage pipes are often made of PVC, but older ones may be copper or another material. Pipes can be either too large or too small. The appropriate size of a drainage pipe will depend on where it is used, such as laundry areas, kitchens, or bathrooms.
  • Incorrectly installed sink traps – Sink traps are often installed wrong by novice handymen, and while your sink may still technically work, drainage won’t be as effective.
  • Improper venting – Proper venting is one of the most critical elements of a safe property. Without it, you risk having poor air quality and even noxious fume buildup.
  • Not enough cleanouts – Unclogging a drain is much easier when the plumber can quickly locate and access a cleanout, which is located outside of your property. If a specific drain causes you recurring problems, you may want to have a cleanout set up specifically for that drain.

These codes are designed to ensure that water pressure is correct and that the structure of your building isn’t weakened by a plumbing fixture. In addition, these rules and regulations ensure the safety and sanitation of your property. For these reasons, even if it feels inconvenient, it’s best to get city code violations handled quickly. Not only does this protect the longevity of your property, but it also reduces liability.

Update Your Historic Building

If you own an older building in Philadelphia, it is more likely that some things won’t measure up to the current plumbing standards. This is nothing to fear, as most problems can be fixed without much hassle.  Plumbing code violations can induce anxiety, especially for business owners who fear being shut down. But they exist for good reason – to protect your own health and your neighborhood’s sanitation. For this reason, avoiding city plumbing code violations in Bucks County and Philadelphia is in your best interests.
