Do you notice that your home water supply doesn’t look especially clear or clean? If you are tired of dry and irritated skin, stiff clothing after doing laundry, or soap scum and mineral deposits built up around your faucets, these are all symptoms of having a hard water system. Water conditioning is a newer technology that is now easy and affordable to implement on any property. At Bill Frusco Plumbing, Heating, & Cooling, we offer water conditioning in Philadelphia so you can have the best quality water on demand.

What is hard water?

The term “hard water” refers to the presence of minerals that are dissolved into solution. These minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium, create two problems:

  • Stiffness is caused by deposits of soap curds left on your skin or in your hair after washing. Frequent use of soap can leave a scum or film on surfaces such as your bathtub or shower doors.
  • A white scale can be left when water evaporates from your pipes and water-using appliances. For example, boiling pasta in hard water leaves a thin layer of undissolved particles on the top of the pan when it cools down. While such a layer may seem arbitrary, it can actually degrade your entire plumbing system. When a layer of film sits within your piping long-term, it promotes bacterial growth that otherwise wouldn’t be there.

How do minerals end up in my water supply?

The body needs certain amounts of trace minerals, but this doesn’t mean the heavy mineral supply in tap water is healthy or necessary. Minerals dissolve out of bedrock (such as granite) and end up in our groundwater. Sedimentary rock like sandstone, limestone, etc., dissolve easily, but igneous rocks like granite dissolve slowly. In the same way that an ice cube takes forever to melt in your freezer versus a glass of room temperature liquid, minerals may never break down in certain environments.

While a water filter is a good start for purifying your water supply, it only solves one element of the hard water problem (the need for cleaner drinking water). In reality, hard water impacts far more than just your physical health and hydration levels. A water conditioning system solves every problem hard water creates, from health problems to weak home appliance functioning and high energy bills. This makes it an all-in-one solution for any home or business.

What is a water softener?

The terms ‘soft’ and ‘hard’ commonly describe a difference in how a person feels after using the water. Calcium and magnesium create a buildup on faucets and appliances, and users may complain of their skin feeling soapy, dry, or irritated when they get out of the shower.

A water softener is a device in which hardness minerals are removed in order to make the water softer. Water softeners use an ion exchange process to remove calcium and magnesium from hard water, replacing them with sodium ions. This works because these metals commonly bond to iodine when dissolved in water, forming insoluble compounds that are not soluble in your body either. Ions are atoms or molecules that have gained or lost an electrical charge due to the gain or loss of an electron.

There are several factors to consider when choosing a water conditioning product: capacity, material, flow rate, type/size of system, installation requirements & how much work you want to do! We provide water conditioning in Philadelphia and get homeowners set up with a system that makes sense for their needs.

The Benefits of Water Conditioning

The water conditioning industry is growing rapidly. More people are switching to conditioned water from their municipal or well water than ever before. Why? Water conditioning in Bucks County has a lengthy list of benefits. They include:

  1. Soft water lasts longer: Because there’s less mineral buildup, appliances and fixtures will last longer and function more efficiently.
  2. Softer hair and skin: The minerals found in hard water can make your hair and skin appear dull or feel heavy and sticky.
  3. Cleaner dishes and cutlery: Hard water makes it harder to remove soap scum from glassware and dishes; soft water decreases spotting on drinking glasses as well as the residues left behind due to detergents which would normally be used to combat such problems caused by hard water minerals like magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt). Other elements such as calcium that cause these issues are often found in the tap water supply in many cities across the US today.

When opting for soft water, you are also fortifying your entire plumbing system and promoting its health well into the future. If you are ready to take advantage of water treatment in Philadelphia, contact us today.
